What the Colón Free Zone is
The Colón Free Zone, on Panama's Atlantic coast, has operated since 1948. It was created to re-export merchandise to Latin America and the Caribbean. Use current official trade statistics, with a stated reporting period, when comparing its export markets.
What is duty-free, and what is not
- The zone has a special customs and tax regime. Confirm whether the particular goods, transaction and procedures qualify for the relevant treatment.
- Ask the supplier and broker to confirm the paperwork and charges for the specific export transaction.
- Your destination has its own import classification, declaration, duty and tax requirements. Consult Law 8 of 2016, articles 53–54, for the zone framework.
Before comparing suppliers, obtain an itemized estimate for your actual transaction and destination.
Why buyers in the Caribbean use Panama
- Location: Panama sits between the Atlantic and Pacific ports, with frequent shipping to the Caribbean and Latin America.
- One source, many categories: apparel, swimwear, accessories and souvenirs can ship together.
- Export planning: confirm the applicable treatment and paperwork before dispatch.
